Reflective Journal

On this page, I shall be talking about the work that I have completed over this semester, before completing a final evaluation after the exhibition is completed. Last semester I completed a landscape documentary photography series in Skegness, a town that has faced a massive amount of decline over the last couple of decades. Last semesters project was one I enjoyed completing, this being the reason why this semester I wanted this project to be in keeping with that style of photography. By keeping this project similar to that of my semester A project, I wanted to recall the abandoned outlook of the project. After experimenting around with how I could relate the In semester 1, I completed a piece based on the decline of the seaside town Skegness. I got really into that project and the approach of landscape documentary photography. From the joy I got from completing my first semester project, I decided that I wanted to continue the approach with this project. The style of abandoned and dead villages left me with no shortage of research, with books and practitioners all contributing and dictating the journey taken with my project, resulting with my final series.

Overall, I am very pleased with the final result of the series, with the variety of dead villages that are presented throughout. Backed up in this blog on the style/approach and research, I believe I have covered all areas of this topic, emailing tutors who specialise in this subject, reading critical theories and research past practitioners work and the approach taken by others. One thing in particular that I have accomplished well is my time management, planning and completing a production log throughout the project. It was important to remain on top of the time I had between choosing my topic and completing all aspects and having my final piece, however, I think that I have stayed in control at all time, planning my visits to locations on a weekly basis, giving me time to get work and research but also feedback in the time round the visits. The overall outlook of this blog is another aspect I am extremely happy with, looking at a professional standard with a large variety of page all revealing content including throughout the journey of this project.

I am pleased with the final series of photographs I have chosen. I feel although they represent my aims throughout the project and I believe that from looking through enables the audience to tell the story I am getting across. I had hundreds of photographs by the end of shooting and visiting locations, leaving me with a large choice of pictures to cut, edit and decide on for my final series. The amount of photographs taken, I feel was appropriate for the size of this project, with the audience able to see throughout the changes that had to be made to certain aspect of pictures, like the composition and lighting. The composition was something I got highly praised about by viewers of this series, and I feel although my hard work based on ensuring all was even and straight has played off, despite the fact that a lot of the countryside had very uneven surfaces to place a tripod down. In relating my work back to those researched, I have also ensured I’ve followed styles of previous practitioners workings.

One thing that I would have done differently would be to visit different places. Despite the fact I visited six different locations, two of which were unable to find or been build on, this discussed in the location profile. I would very much liked to travel to more than six however, with the time period I had, it was clear six was appropriate for this project, even if only four feature in the photographs. Turning a negative into a positive though, I feel although the continuous green grass and moody sky throughout my work works well. There was only one trip where it got sunny and I’m pleased it was only one; you can see the photographs on the test shots page, where I go over all the different style and approaches of photographs I used throughout this project.

I believe that I have met the learning objectives for this Major Project 2, through my ideas generated turning into research points and then developing into my project and resulting in my final series. I believe every stage of this project has been completed to the best of my ability, revealing all that have recommended or influence the route I have taken to completing. I believe that I have set myself up nicely for the exhibition, created a plan of how my project will be presented and how it will look.

Conclusion/Reflective Journal to be completed once Exhibition is over. 30th May 2017.
